In response to the mounting crisis of oil theft, which has severely impacted national revenues, Mr. John Aondoaseer, a prominent health, safety, environment, and risk management expert in the oil and gas sector, has called for the Federal Government to integrate drones and Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems into their countermeasures.

Aondoaseer believes these advanced technologies could significantly improve surveillance, detection, and response efforts, offering a modern solution to a problem that is undermining the nation’s economy. He expressed concern over the current method, which relies on physical responses from individuals after incidents are reported, noting that this approach is both stressful and hazardous for responders. The physical and psychological toll on these individuals highlights the urgent need for a more efficient and safer response strategy.

The expert pointed out that each location affected by oil theft or illegal refining poses serious risks. These sites can quickly become volatile and dangerous, presenting numerous health, safety, and environmental hazards, including exposure to toxic substances, ongoing hydrocarbon spills, explosive atmospheres, and the presence of hazardous chemicals. The hazardous nature of these sites underscores the need for robust safety measures and advanced risk management.

Aondoaseer advocated for the adoption of drones and AI, which he believes will deliver superior results compared to traditional response methods. Drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and sensors can offer continuous aerial surveillance of pipelines, oil facilities, and surrounding areas, capturing real-time data and visual feeds. This technology allows for the identification of unauthorized activities, potential threats, and illegal pipeline taps.

“Drones can capture detailed images and videos, which aid in identifying and addressing potential theft activities. Their rapid deployment capabilities enable quick responses, significantly reducing the time required to assess and address issues. In remote and hazardous locations, drones can provide critical information without exposing human responders to danger,” Aondoaseer explained.

He emphasized the value of employing advanced sensors and AI algorithms for early detection, noting that these technologies can continuously monitor pipelines and issue real-time alerts for anomalies such as leaks and unauthorized activities. Thermal imaging cameras on drones can also detect heat signatures indicative of illegal activities or equipment tampering, particularly in low-visibility conditions like nighttime or dense vegetation.

“The visible presence of drones can act as a deterrent to potential thieves, reducing the likelihood of theft attempts and bolstering overall security efforts. Automated alerts from drones can notify security personnel and local authorities of suspicious activities, enabling swift intervention,” Aondoaseer added.

Aondoaseer also highlighted the cost efficiency of drones compared to traditional patrol methods. He noted that drones are relatively inexpensive to operate and can significantly reduce overall security costs. They mitigate the expenses associated with traditional security deployments and the risks of responder fatalities and injuries. Furthermore, early detection and rapid response facilitated by drones can prevent extensive damage to infrastructure, thereby lowering repair and maintenance costs.

“Companies often face high expenses due to inadequate security measures that necessitate additional deployments for repairs and evacuations. Drones offer a cost-effective alternative that enhances safety and operational efficiency,” he concluded.
