TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s Nikkei average fell broadly on Wednesday, tracking losses on Wall Street overnight on concerns that economic growth will slow as hopes of U.S. tariff concessions fade.
The Nikkei fell 3.1% to 32,010.93 as of 00:16 GMT. The broader Topix fell 3% to 2,360.32.
The S&P 500 fell sharply on Tuesday, closing below 5,000 for the first time in nearly a year, reversing strong early gains as investors’ hopes faded that the United States would delay or make tariff concessions before a midnight deadline.
In Japan, technology stocks led the decline, with chip testing equipment maker Advantest falling 9% and chipmaking equipment maker Tokyo Electron falling 4.85%.
