The UK Charity Commission has launched a compliance inquiry into Saba Relief & Development Foundation Limited, a charity registered in 2013 with the mission to alleviate poverty in Yemen. The investigation, initiated on July 19, 2024, follows complaints regarding the end use of charitable funds sent to Yemen and concerns over the charity’s governance and due diligence practices.

The regulator is particularly focused on whether the trustees of Saba Relief & Development Foundation have adequately accounted for the funds directed to Yemen. Additionally, the Commission is scrutinizing the charity’s due diligence processes, especially its collaboration with partner organizations in the region.

The inquiry will examine several key areas, including the trustees’ adherence to their legal duties under the charity’s governing document, the proper use and tracking of charitable funds, and the suitability and oversight of the charity’s partnerships. The Commission has indicated that the scope of the inquiry may be broadened if further regulatory issues are identified.

Upon completion of the investigation, the Charity Commission is expected to publish a report outlining the issues reviewed, actions taken, and the overall outcomes of the inquiry, in line with its standard procedures.
